Mining in Goa supports various ancillary units, for example, For the excavation of Ore - Earth moving machinery, Transportation by road- Truck operators, Transport of ore by rivers- Barge industry.
Earth Moving machinery is often hired by the mining industry. This has in turn resulted in the formation of ancillary industries like spare part shops, vehicle repair shops etc. The mining companies offer attractive schemes to locals by which the latter can own their own vehicles.
Ore is transported to the ports through the inland waterways by barges, which use two of Goa's perennial river courses, the Mandovi and the Zuari. The average size of the barge range from 750 DWT to 2450 DWT. Barges are owned as well as hired from private parties. This has also given rise to dockyards and other repair units.
